The Professor Emeritus of Sociology of Religion has passed away in his
69th year at the hospital in Uppsala surrounded by his family.
Thorleif Pettersson had a long and successful academic carrier behind
him with a professorship at Uppsala University, Sweden, in the Sociology of
religion (1988– 2008) and as a senior Researcher at the Ersta Sköndal
University College, Stockholm and Uppsala. Thorleif Pettersson had an
impressive network also outside the universities. He was one of the key persons in the research network World Values
Survey (WVS) and he had an impressive academic production including not only
classical sociology of religion but also broader works in social science, often
discussing basic values, might it be on culture, security, sustainable
development or about globalization, value change and generations. His great interest
in developing the methodology of survey research led him into new research
territories like the issue of a north-south divide in basic value profiles
The team of ASEP/JDSurvey expresses its great appreciation of his
contribution to the World Values Survey and European Values Surveys and its
deepest sympathy to his person.
